Although I have visited Hawkes Bay often over the years, I’ve never quite timed it right to experience the fun and excitement of an Art Deco weekend in Napier.https://www.hawkesbaynz.com/see-and-do/art-design-and-culture/the-art-deco-guide/napier-art-deco-festival/?gclid=CjwKCAiA767jBRBqEiwAGdAOr4eJ37pHlMjvuoyFce7RIdXx5YU_PsLgtAz9sMk08sq0JCzu_GajhRoCxA0QAvD_BwE
Each year, tens of thousands of people from all over the world take part in this iconic 1930s festival.
This year, I was lucky enough to be in Napier to be part of this amazing Art Deco festival, dressing up in true Art Deco style with my sisters and enjoying being among the many locals and tourists visiting Napier.
During this time, Napier offers many wonderful outdoor concerts as well as vintage car parades, fashions shows, dining experiences and great Gatsby picnics along Napier’s beautiful Marine Parade.
Since the devastating 1931 earthquake, Napier was re-built with many beautiful examples of Art Deco buildings, which have been lovingly restored and look amazing, like the old Daily Telegraph Newspaper building below!
Love this old-fashioned pram with its little canopy and the kids look great, too!
The Gatsby-type picnic fare inside people’s individual picnic tents along the Marine Parade in Napier looked delicious!
Seems everyone made an effort to dress in their Art Deco gear.
There was a lovely old tram car which took visitors on sightseeing trips around Napier city and was even making its way up Bluff Hill.
Just had to add this little fellow above – brought back a few memories from times travelling around Europe back in the 70’s . Though I have to say that I never saw any as immaculate as this one!!
Lovely to encounter friendly and courteous gentleman from the Hawkes Bay Express as my sister and I were walking up Hospital Terrace. Here’s the link if anyone is interested in booking a tour. https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=Hawkes+Bay+Express#lrd=0x6d69b463425785f3:0x41e163cb7f708bb8,1,,,
During the afternoon there was a fantastic air display by the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) http://www.airforce.mil.nz/about-us/news/whats-on/archive/events/75th-anniversary/art-deco-event-napier.htm
It’s been a memorable weekend in Napier and I’m looking forward to going up to Mahia next.
