I remember only too well arriving in Fremantle in early January 1974.
That’s a lifetime ago!
My ex husband and I had travelled on a jet/ship ticket – leaving from an icy cold winter’s day in Gatwick, England on Boxing Day 1973 and flying into the fierce humidity of Singapore 17 hours later (me still in long sleeved winter clothes!), where we then boarded a Russian ship to Fremantle.
This time, however, I was well and truly in the driver’s seat of my own vehicle when I left Bunbury for Fremantle. It was fairly straightforward really; in no time at all I was caught in a stream of traffic on the freeway heading for Perth.
It felt very similar to being in Melbourne on the busy freeways and I was pleased to get to East Fremantle in time to settle in at the Airbnb and have some lunch.
I took the opportunity to walk around Fremantle as much as I could, and not far from where I was staying was the very elegant Swan Yacht Club with a massive marina containing literally hundreds of smart and expensive-looking yachts and launches and (mini?) ships.
And obviously the boating people can afford to participate in some plate-smashing fun as I found this sign near the marina …
There are some beautiful reserves with children’s playgrounds and I came across this gigantic statue of a woman sitting on a picnic table and couldn’t resist taking a photo – I did wonder whether children might be frightened of this huge woman and her dog but I did see a photo of a young child sitting on her knee somewhere.
Fremantle has many beautiful old buildings and in the town there are lots of young people on the streets and in the cafes, being the hub of the Notre Dame University.
Drove around the coast road to Cottlesloe with its beautiful beaches and spied Bluebird’s (brother?) parked not far from me – I have to include this because it’s only about the third time I’ve come across the same model car as mine since I bought it!!
Had a great coffee at Puck, a trendy little coffee bar at Stammers Shopping Centre in Palmyra.
Found the most incredible fresh food grocery store with eye catching display of fresh fruit and vegies. Tried persimmons or fuyu for the first time ever and ended up buying some, they tasted so fresh and flavorsome.
