One of the main reasons I love doing this journey is the amazing characters you meet on the road!
Had a real sense of ‘this is really really real!’ when I saw this road sign just out of Port Augusta – so just had to stop and take a photo …
And after leaving Port Augusta, where I feasted on a huge brekkie to prepare for the day’s adventures, I stopped at Kimba for a coffee at ‘Eileen’s Coffee Shop’ (always looking for the quaint and quirky places!) Got chatting to Rosemary, who told me she was 80 years old and is a published poet. She and her husband had lived in New Guinea as missionaries, but Rosemary’s home base is now Adelaide. However, she spends most of her time driving around Australia (and sleeping in) her old Toyota RAV to save money on accommodation. She absolutely loves the outback and the ‘gypsy’ life. And I have to say, she looks very well for it!
Whilst talking about Kimba – it also has some more great silo art work. The colours are spectacular.
Carried on to Ceduna where I stayed in an ‘A1’ cabin in the campground with a photo of 9 puppy dogs on my cabin wall (not too sure why that sticks in my mind!) Had an older couple staying next to me from Perth and eager to contact their kids to let them know they had survived the trip over the Nullarbor despite the kids’ apparent misgivings!
Oh yes, we oldies are a lot more resilient than some might think!!
Early morning in Ceduna
Despite pulling the somewhat shaky curtain together with the rod off the kitchen window, and having to ask for a bulb for the bedside light, I enjoyed my stay at Ceduna, a pretty coastal town with a nice feel about it. When I first arrived mid-afternoon I actually sat outside on my little porch to write my blog and really enjoyed the peace and quiet. I think I’m only just beginning to realise just how much I am normally ‘on the go’, not really giving myself permission to relax. Well, darn it, now I’m doing it!!
Iron Knob is a former mining town near Whyalla on the Eyre Peninsula which has seen changing fortunes and hard times.
Onwards to the Nullarbor Roadhouse …
